Marietje (Mary) Regina Josepha Aarts (née van Ooijen) passed away peacefully in Langley, BC, on Thursday, April 17, 2025 (Holy Thursday) after a brief battle with cancer.
Mary was born on March 18, 1940, in Lith, the Netherlands, to Theodorus van Ooijen and An de Jong. After losing her mother at age four, Mary and her brother, Joe, were cared for by their uncle and aunt, Klaas and Bertha de Jong. In 1956, at age fourteen, Mary, Joe, and their aunt and uncle emigrated from the Netherlands and immigrated to Alberta, where they embraced the challenging life of farmers.
While working at the hospital in Medicine Hat, Mary met her husband, Leo Aarts. They married on March 27, 1971, and later moved to Langley, BC, where they had three children: Angela, John, and Lisa. For over forty years, Mary and Leo worked hard to establish their nursery business, which has since been passed on to their daughter, Lisa.
Mary and Leo were blessed with five grandchildren through Angela’s marriage to Darryl (Griffin): Nicolas, Jacob, Georgia, Lincoln, and Sebastian. Mary was happiest among her flowers and plants, and she enjoyed gardening, listening to classic Dutch music, and watching daily Mass on television.
Mary endured great loss in her later years—her son, John, succumbed to cancer in 2012, and Leo passed away in 2018. After Leo’s death, Mary moved to Langley Gardens, where she delighted in a competitive game of bingo and visits from friends and family.
She spent her final days at the Doug and Fran MacDonald Langley Hospice, surrounded by love and care. She will be dearly missed by her children, grandchildren, and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, April 28, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Gardens of Gethsemani Catholic Cemetery in Surrey, BC.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation or Langley Hospice Society.
